Learn About the Documentary "Journeyman"
In the Minneapolis Star Tribune (Sat. Nov. 10th, 2007) there is a story
on boy-culture and the "Journeyman" film. In this film you'll see men and boys
that we've been working with since the first Rites of Passage Adventure Weekend
(RPAW) in 2001. The story is in the STAR TRIBUNE Source section as a piece
titled "
What about the boys?"
"Journeyman," is a Minnesota documentary on mentoring and two boy's paths
to manhood. This is a new documentary about American boy culture and the need
for male mentors. After two years of local filming, "Journeyman" will dare
to explore why male depression and violence has been escalating in America,
and how mentoring changes lives. Created by director Kevin Obsatz and producer
Charlie Borden, Journeyman explores experiences of mentoring, rites of passage,
and male culture in America.
Journeyman focuses on the worlds of two boys, Mike and Joe. It introduces
us to their families, their strengths, their limitations, and the challenges
each face in overcoming obstacles as they move from boyhood toward manhood.
The film features Michael Gurian (The Good Son, The Wonder of Boys, Dr. Michael
Obsatz (Raising Nonviolent Children in a Violent World), Dr. Barbara Coloroso,
(Kids Are Worth It), Dr. David Walsh (The Selling Out of America's Children,
Why Do They Act that Way?).
With these experts, Journeyman studies the phenomena of "at risk" boys plus
issues in American male culture. The film discovers experiments to reinvent
male communities by giving boys what they need to grow into mature manhood.
Finally, Journeyman follows its' characters into an authentic "Rites of Passage"
where mentoring from a community of men and boys create a transformation experience
for young boys entering adolescence.
